Foundation Gift $56,000 For Teacher Training

The Foundation presented Principal Dr. Linda Cartlidge with a check for $56,000 on February 27, 2009. This money will be used to send teachers across the country for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) course teaching certification.

2004 Science Chair Brian Murray with student Philip Cherry and Marty Cherry, who donated the telescope to the school. Science Chair Brian Murray helps student Philip Cherry adjust the school's new computer telescope, Marty Cherry, who made the gift in 2004, looks on.

Suncoast has a national reputation for academic excellence, continually challenging students with an array of college level classes. To maintain this high standard of excellence teachers must undergo AP and IB training that will allow them to effectively present the course material. The Palm Beach County School District supports teacher training, but is unable to provide the funding at this time.

Dr. Cartlidge had determined that this training was vital and asked the Foundation for help. If the teacher training was not provided Suncoast High School's ability to deliver academic excellence might have undercut.

The benefit from this investment in teacher training will begin to impact the students with the start of the next academic year in fall 2009. The Suncoast High School Foundation is very proud and grateful to have donors who supported this important project, and met the goal of raising the required $56,000 in a difficult economic climate.
